1753 William Roscoe was born in Mount Pleasant, Liverpool. William moved with his family to the countryside, Dingle, Toxteth Park. Roscoe was a Liverpool Lawyer, writer, historian, MP and philanthropist (someone who does good to help other people). He also worked hard to abolish slavery. Roscoe spoke several languages. William Roscoe died 1831, in Toxteth, Liverpool.
Richard Starkey aka Ringo Starr (Beatles) was born on the 7th July 1940 in 9 Madryn Street, Dingle. Ringo attended St.Silas infants and Dingle Vale Secondary modern school with classmate Billy Fury. Ringo was the drummer in The Beatles and the rest of the story is history.
Gerry Marsden of (Gerry & the Pacemakers) was born in the Dingle in 1942. Gerry was also a member of the youth club The Florence Institute for Boys on Mill Street. The song "You'll Never Walk Alone" was sung by Gerry & The Pacemakers which is now and has been the anthem of Liverpool Football Club for many years.
Ronald Wycherley aka (Bill Fury) was born in the Dingle 1940. A bout of rheumatic fever at the age of six left Billy with a permanently damaged heart, which lead to his premature death.
Billy Fury sadly died on 27th January 1983 aged just 42.
Footballer Ian Callaghan was born in the Dingle. Ian lived in Carlye Gardens with his family in the 60's and the early 70's. Ian Callaghan stands alone as Liverpool's greatest ever servant. His record 856 appearances for Liverpool are never likely to be challenged. Ian Callaghan holds another sobering distinction, he is the only Liverpool Player whose career at Anfield spanned that of Bill Shankleys.
Leonard Rossiter was born 21sts October 1926. He attended Granby Street School. His father owned a barber shop on Wavertree Road. Leonard also went to the dance hall, The Rialto in Parliament Street. Leonard played the comical Rigsby in Raising Damp.
Leonard Rossiter sadly died on the 5th October 1984.
Another local boy Robbie Fowler was born April 1975. Robbie went to the local school of St.Patricks on Park Road.
Robbie played his professional debut for Liverpool Football Club in September 1993, two weeks later Robbie went on to score all five goals in a 5 - 0 win becoming only the fourth player in Liverpool's history to score five goals in a senior fixture.
Robbie is still playing professional football at Manchester City FC.
